This lesson aims to give the pupils an idea about nutritional values, food shopping behavior, and personal diet.

I try to use all of Gardner's multiple intelligences in this lesson. It is however very easy to skip one or two aspects of the lesson if the class situation doesn't allow this version of teaching or the students do not have such a high level of independent working due to age or other circumstances. The different aspects will be all in single paragraphs and it is up to you which of these you want to implement in your lesson.

Introduction

Learning goal

Students will be able to

  • think about food shopping behavior
  • be aware of marketing and advertisement strategies
  • create a healthier diet for themselves
  • know about the ingredients of many foods
  • about recommended daily intake of fat, carbon hydrates and other important nutritional factors

Prerequisite

  • Knowledge about nutrition (teacher)
  • Internet access or prepared handouts

Material

  • This lessons requires quite a lot of materials but they are easy to obtain and are mostly everyday items
  • Nutritional tables x5, this can easily be obtained by a simple internet search
  • Flipcharts for presentations
  • Products for the students
  • Internet access for the students or handouts about the products
  • Material for the creation of the jingle, like flutes, drums or Pc's
  • Flipcharts or Pc's access for the final presentations

Lesson

Outline

1. Pupils will work in groups of 4. Either let them decide themselves about the groups or create them before.

2. If you don't plan to let the students shop for themselves go ahead and obtain some the food containers, cans or wrappings with a wide variety of products like soda, sweets, fruits etc.. Make sure however that they have a label about nutritional information. This will make it easier for the students to get information about the product. An alternative would be to let the students research information about the product via the internet or prepared handouts. My plan would be to let the students shop as homework but have some products myself as a safety net.

3. If you want the students to do the musical task please prepare some instruments or laptops that enable the students to create their jingle

Content

This will be the part where I explain the different working phases of the lesson. Feel free to use as many of them as you see fit.

Obtaining the product

Groups have to choose the product they want to work with during the next few lessons. This can either be done by letting the students shop for themselves or by bringing the items to class

Get the Information

In this phase the students have to get the information about the product, either by using the information on the product, doing Internet research or with prepared handouts.

What are the ingredients and should I eat this?

In this stage the students compare the information of their product with the nutritional value table and calculate the percentage of fat, sodium, carbon-hydrates etc. of their daily intake if they would consume a reasonable amount of the product.

Create a newspaper article

The groups should now create a newspaper article with a reasonable amount of words about the product. They can choose to praise the article or write a critical comment.

Create a radio advertisement

Now the groups have to think about a radio advertisement about their product. This should be done by creating a small jingle and some spoken words.

Prepare a presentation

The final task is to create a presentation about the product. The guidelines for the presentation could be:

  1. Try to sell the product to a group of investors
  2. Make aware how good or bad the product is
  3. Try to convince people to buy the product at a fair or something similar

This can of course always include the jingle and all previous work.

The Diary

During the course of a week or two the students are supposed to keep a diary about their diet. This can then be analyzed in an additional lesson later and is very helpful for the students to get an idea about their own diet. It could also be interesting to let the students do this previous to the lessons and afterwards and check for changes in their diet.

Information for students

Students should be informed that the next lessons have the topic food shopping, nutrition and marketing. It has to be made clear which of the tasks mentioned above will be exercised. The students have to form groups of up to 4 people.

Additional information for teachers

Information about the lesson topics can be found at pages such as your national governmental health office or other institutions that operate freely and are not biased by company for marketing purposes.

Even with no direct traditional language teaching aspects like grammar training or vocabulary training, the lesson can easily be adopted to serve such purposes. It is possible maybe even necessary to implement new vocabulary to help the students in this lessons. Grammar can be introduced in the process of working with the newspaper article or the presentation. Furthermore speaking, fluency and listening skills are improved by the constant discussion within the small groups, the jingle and the final presentation.
