Memory game

Procedure

<item>s in a given round may be restricted to items found in a single kind of store, maybe a grocery store, clothier, hardware store or a stationer.

Write "I went shopping and I bought ..." on the board. Ensure the students have read and understand those words.

  1. Have maximum of 10 students at the front of the class in a line/order. Teacher is at the head and goes first.
  2. Teacher says, "I went shopping and I bought <item>" (let's say "socks")
  3. Encourage student 1 to say the words, by looking at him and pointing to the words "I went shopping and I bought ". Interrupt with "socks and " (pointing at yourself). Then point to student 1 asking what he bought. Perhaps he says "shoes". (NB: praise a good answer)
  4. Encourage student 2 in the same way pointing to yourself for "socks" (from his memory now) and student 1 for "shoes". Then point at student 2, perhaps asking what they bought.

By student 3 they are in the flow. They must start with the teacher's <item>, flow down the line of students and add an <item> themselves: "I went shopping and I bought socks, shoes, and a shirt."

At about student 5 I ask student 10 if he is worried!

This can also be repeated with a new set of 10 students but will get boring beyond 2 or 3 rounds.

Extension

  • Have the entire class remember all <item>s from the teacher on down the line.
