Look out

Q: What should a first time teacher look out for before accepting a position in China?

A: Understand it is a temporary job. Follow the rules and have a good time. Work a year or two and then move on to a less exploitative country.

A: First you have to investigate the employer's reputation, there are many crooks out there who have companies, and employ teachers then violate all the stipulations in the contract (in particular the financial obligations), I went through that experience in person. Anyone who is looking at an opportunity in China or any where else should try to extensively research all the available blogs (a good one is www.blogger.com, you can also use the search engine at Wikigogy.org), this is a very powerful tool as teachers post there sweet and bitter experiences, then there should also be a search about the cost of living in the intended city, air quality, traffic, entertainment...etc.

Retiring on what?

Q: I am 59 and am looking to start a career in teaching English overseas; in China or elsewhere in Asia. But I am confronted with the realization that older people are not necessarily welcomed to many countries. I am looking for some input from others to help with making a decision about this career move.

A: Your retirement planning comes first. Teaching English abroad does not provide for it. If you already have your retirement funded, then teaching English in China at an older age (older than 60) is not a problem. You'll have more respect from students and staff. While teaching kids takes lots of energy and is not recommended, college age and older students would be a good fit for you.
