Across the Universe - a movie lesson

During the Spring Festival I previewed several movies that I might show my class and I really questioned whether I should use Across the Universe because the movie has so many jumps in place and time that it's very difficult to follow. However, I finally decided to use it because of the great Beatles songs in the movies, which I taught as well. As usual, I showed the movie in English with English subtitles.

I'm sharing the materials that I used with this movie. By the way, TV Carpio, an actress in the movie, grew up in Hong Kong. The way she sings, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is truly wonderful. The first-year university students in my classes found the controversy interesting about a woman singing this song and the speculation about the character's sexual orientation. This movie is valuable because it shows some of the counterculture and anti-war movement of the sixties in the U.S. Viewing the movie prompted several questions from students about American culture.
